Stained Glass Hearts: A Sweet and Simple Valentine's Day Craft
Now that we have passed the one month mark, we are officially counting down to Valentine’s Day and couldn’t be more excited about it.
We have made these sweet little “stained glass” hearts for the last several years and I thought I’d finally share them with you. They are really sweet and a simple activity to do together. We started these many years ago and Olivia is still excited to make them this year, so I’d say they work great for a range of ages. The older the children are, the more they can take on- perhaps cutting the heart shape or tissue paper themselves.
We enjoy hanging these in our windows at home and we also usually make some and send to her grandparents for them to enjoy too. We make a variety or sizes and colors.
To make these, you’ll need:
Paper (We always use a mix of pinks and white)
Contact Paper
TIssue Paper (We always use a mix of pinks and white)
Scissors
I usually like to cut everything first and then we can just make a big batch of them, but you can also cut and create as you go.
Cut a variety of tissue paper. We always use a mix of colors and cut in rectangle or square shapes.
Cut your heart borders. We always do a mix of sizes, mostly large or medium in size, as the small ones are a bit harder to see.
Cut your contact paper. You will need two sheets of contact paper for each heart. It’s easiest to measure the size we need and then cut a duplicate. I cut this in a square/rectangle shape and trim it later.
Once you have your supplies ready, you will peel off the backing of the contact paper and place one heart border on top of it. Press the heart shape carefully to help ensure there are no bubbles in the paper.
Once your boarder is in place, simply fill it in with a variety of tissue paper, sticking them to the contact paper until your creation feels complete.
When you have finished, take the other, matching size contact paper and place it on top of the heart, sticky side down. You’re essentially making a heart sandwich with the contact paper- smooth sides will be on the outsides and sticky sides will be inside.
Simply trim the edges of your contact paper so that they align with the heart edges.
Then you can hang up your heart or send it to a loved one! We always make enough to do both!
Hope you enjoy making these! Supplies are linked at the very end. xo
